The address for Real Eyes was really Oldsmar, Florida. It once was the site of the Historic "Mars Hotel". Where John Katz destroyed a Pinata in the midst of a populated party. A place where a mailman would leave his Hamburger Helper supper on the stove in the morning. A place where hippies dried fruit in the backyard. A place that was busted for one pot plant growing in a bedroom in a 4 inch pot. A place where the cupboard was full of cans of jalapenos. A place where a Volkswagen engine was rebuilt in the bar. A place where many practice sessions were held in the timeless zone.
A place where recently "retired" Allman Brothers Roadies Kim Payne and Mike Callahan entertained with road stories during a golden bud of an afternoon. Kim shared in an email a year or so ago that not only did he remember the afternoon in question but added they were en route to apply for jobs with Lynyrd Skynyrd but the "delay" caused them to miss their aointment...which may have saved their lives.

ReplyDeletea place where i had my one and only hangover from Jack Daniels on the day my parents decided to visit-a place where Dan Sherman heard Butch singing Old and In The Way and was convinced it was being directed towards him-a place where $100(Sandpiper pay) of fuel oil lasted maybe 2 days trying to heat the place-Brown Rice and Eggs,Avacados W/mayo,my brothers wedding under the oak-on and on i could go.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think anybody remembered the Old Mars Motel. I ask friends and they don't have a clue. I remember. I remember the orange sunshine, climbing out the window and sitting on the roof New Years Eve tripping my ass off. The sessions with the band, parties in the back lot. I remember almost all of it except WHERE THE HELL DID THEY PUT THE MOTEL.
